Akoben (2019)

One day, as I was sitting near her,

 Duafe told me :

"Don’t worry. Anywhere you stand on Earth,

the palm trees will continue to guide you from here…

A gentle breeze to your ears and shoulders.  Remember ?

They know way more than you think."

Akoben, the war horn, is the Adinkra symbol of vigilance and wariness. It is an instrument used to sound a battle cry, give alert.

This is a powerful symbol that I have been wanting to work with for a long time, but without a military dimension.

It finally hit me this year with the Breast Cancer Awareness Month that I could use Akoben with the pink ribbon. To me, if there is one Adinkra symbol that can encourage people to check their breasts (yes, men too can be affected), it is Akoben.

Vigilance and wariness are the first weapons we possess to protect ourselves from a potential danger. Not the only weapons thankfully, but surely the first ones…
