Asaawa (2019)

" We just sat there and

were granted a miracle.

It was flavored with eternity… "

Asaawa means « sweet berry » in Akan language. It is an actual plant that grows in West Africa. Its fruits have the power, after you eat them, to give a sweet taste to any sour food you’ll have. For this reason, Asaawa is the Adinkra symbol of tenderness, sweetness and sweet taste.

It is no secret that one of the most important ingredients for a healthy and long lasting relationship is the sharing of quality time with the person you’re in love with.

So here are two lovers sharing quality time while seating at a table on the beach and enjoying treats (stamped with Asaawa symbol). They are sharing a box of delicious donuts and drinking from the same cup. The straws are meant to enable them to experience the same sweet taste at the same time while looking into each others eyes. Just try to imagine them or think of yourself with your sweetheart. 😊

I chose not to represent full bodied characters this time because I wanted the hands to depict the love and tenderness. It is all in the hand holding the other, plus you can see that at least one of these hands has been drawing symbols of love on the napkin : hearts and Odo nnyew fie kwan (Adinkra symbol of the power of love meaning that ‘’love never loses its way home’’).

Thankfully the possibility to enjoy that quality time is not limited to the beach. It obviously can take place anywhere : at home, on a public bench, at the movie, in a nice restaurant or a fast food, in the queue at the supermarket and even in a hospital room… It can last a whole day, a half day, one hour, ten minutes, two seconds… The most important thing is to repeat those moments, multiply those moments  because each time you have them is an opportunity to replace bitterness with sweetness in your body, therefore in your life…

The background in this painting is still very symbolic. If you know my works you already know why. If you don’t or don’t remember then go to the first painting of the Romance section. You’ll see that a special spirit is surrounding this couple 😉

The sweet berry is also known as the ‘’miracle fruit’’. Another great name for love. Don’t you think ?
