Lose Battles Win the War (2016)

" I told them Karma was my best friend,

They were quick to forget.

I didn’t tell them about

my weapons and protector,

They were soon to find out."

Lose Battles Win the War represents the victory of determination over adversities that we may have to face throughout our lives. A chess board proved to be the best way to picture this. So the game has just ended. Queen Determination has defeated King Prejudice and it was a total knock out !

The purpose of this work is to remind the necessity to always believe in self and to never give up eventhough resources (like money, love, joy and laughter) have ran out whereas hostilities (like backstabbing, jealousy, manipulation or greed) are heavy and strong.

Prejudice are various types of discrimination that can be racial, social, gender based or about looks. The pain they cause may often seem endless because they are inflicted by people who seem so powerful. But in such circumstances, determination, meaning belief, in self is the most wonderful weapon for protection and being able to stand.

Lose battles Win the War is one of my first paintings. It goes back to the time when I would use only one and same symbol, Gye Nyame (Supremacy of God) in my works. I purposefully placed it on the very hand that moves the victory pawn to emphasize the great power created by the alliance of determination and divine help to overcome our difficulties.

Belief in self is also called love of self.
