The Kente Weaver - Ananse Ntontan (2021)

I was born on a rainy sunny Wednesday.
From my early hours
I was a much happy and live boy,
waving my arms and
kicking my legs in the air.
My parents and visitors
started debating over my future.
Someone said :
‘’He will be a teacher !’’
Somebody else said :
- No ! A leader !
- No ! A soldier !
- No ! A musician !...
When my grandfather arrived
he was the only one
Who saw in my eyes
the reflection of the rainbow
that was reigning outside.
He sat back, with a smile on his face
And silenty said to himself :
‘’Ananse… He will be a weaver.

Have you ever had the opportunity to see a Kente cloth weaver at work ? I could spent hours watching them alternate their colored threads on the loom.
In a seemingly well defined rythm and with all the agility in the world, they create long and magnificent strips of fabrics made from cotton or silk and decorated with meaningful patterns and symbols. They will later assemble those strips together to form a large piece of this traditional fabrics of royal and ceremonial reputation.
Ananse Ntontan, on the weaver’s t-shirt, means spider’s web. It is the Adinkra symbol of creativity, wisdom, craftiness and complexities of life.  These are qualities and values that define a weaver the same way they define a spider spinning its web.
Ananse (or Anansi) , the spider, is also one of the most popular characters of african folktale. It’s been the inspiration of many stories. You will find a story of that spider in the playlist.
