Treasure the Pieces (2019)

This painting symbolizes the qualities we all have within ourselves to achieve goals and face adversities of life. It is also about how we should know enough to value that strength for ourselves.

Wawa Aba, seed of the wawa tree, known for being extremely hard, is the Adinkra symbol of perseverance, hardiness and toughness.

Here we have a woman dressed in sportswear (also symbolic) who has just received a gold medal shaped as a jigsaw piece. You can see that it fits one of the remaining holes of a giant Wawa Aba.

The painting purposefully doesn’t show how many pieces the jigsaw is made of. Nobody knows how many pieces are actually missing. Nobody knows how long and how much effort it will take to complete it. This is just about being able to never back down and being proud of it.

This woman has many assets for this. The tattoo on her arm is Owia a Repue, the rising sun, symbol of progress, renewal, warmth and energy.
