" They get so little time together,
that some nights I let her stream
her light on my skin so that
the sun can see it when she’s gone.
Then he will spray a halo on me
for the moon to see.’’
This is Mekyia Wo. Her name, represented on her crown, means ‘’I salute you’’. It is the Adinkra symbol of respect, recognition and greeting. Mekyia Wo genuinely cares about every single person she encounters and people know it instantly.
She is able to detect and feel pain and sorrow in others as she knows about trials herself. Proof of that is the Aya symbol on her left arm bracelet. Aya, the fern, symbolizes endurance and resourcefulness. ‘’An individual who wears this symbol suggests that she has endured many adversities and outlasted much difficulty’’ (B. Willis, the Adinkra Dictionary).
Mekyia Wo also has the ability to detect and feel good energy and great potential in others. She is the empath, the compassionate girl of her group. For this matter she will often team up with Gye W’ani* to be of support to other people. These women are aspects of that great quality called kindness.
*Check among my earlier paintings. Gye W’ani is a character I created around the symbol of the same name meaning ‘’Enjoy yourself’’. I made her a guardian of positivity and hobbies.
